
Why We’re Moving to Infrared for Lead-Free Drying
For a long time, we just threw everything into big convection ovens and hoped for the best. But that’s changing. More and more, we’re switching over to infrared (IR) curing. It’s not just about following “green” mandates or getting rid of lead—it’s about the fact that it actually works better. Think about a convection oven. You have to heat up the entire room, the air, the walls… everything. It’s a waste. IR is different. It hits the substrate directly. It’s like the difference between heating your whole house to warm up a slice of pizza versus just using a toaster. Because the energy goes straight into the photoresist or solder paste, you don’t need those heavy, solvent-based carriers that smell like a chemistry lab and cough out toxic fumes. Plus, the ramp-up is incredibly fast. You aren’t waiting around for the air to reach a certain temperature, which means your electricity bill takes a hit in a good way. Then there’s the lead-free problem. Lead-free solders are stubborn. They need way more heat to reflow than the old SnPb stuff. If you try to force that with a standard oven, you often end up scorching the edges of the PCB before the center is even warm. With IR, we can tweak the wavelength—switching between short-wave or medium-wave—to hit the exact spot where the material absorbs heat. You get a clean, wet joint without stressing the board to death. But look, it’s not a “plug and play” situation. You can’t just rip out your oven and slap in an IR lamp and expect it to work. IR packs a lot of heat into a small area. If your part has some thick spots and some thin spots, you’re going to run into “hot spotting.” You might burn through a thin section before the thick part even gets warm. You’ve got to be smart about your lamp arrays and conveyor speeds to make sure the heat is spread evenly across the wafer. Still, once you get it dialed in? It’s a breath of fresh air. We’re using these systems to kill off those chemical-heavy drying stages. Your drying line takes up way less floor space, and your warm-up time goes from hours to seconds. It keeps the regulators happy, sure, but it mostly just makes the whole day run smoother.
