
Keeping Your Fab Clean (And Your Yield High)
If you’re running a Class 100 cleanroom, you already know the nightmare of particle shedding. One tiny flake from a cheap heating element and your wafers are toast. It’s frustrating, it’s expensive, and it kills your yield. That’s why we stopped messing around with standard heaters and switched to high-purity fused quartz for our IR lamps. Why quartz? Think of it this way: metal-sheathed heaters eventually peel or oxidize. They just do. But synthetic fused quartz is different. It doesn’t react with the environment, and it doesn’t flake off metallic ions into your drying chamber. Plus, it handles the heat like a pro. Since it doesn’t expand or contract much when the temperature swings, you don’t have to worry about the tubes cracking during rapid thermal cycles. It just stays stable. Getting the heat where it belongs These lamps use shortwave IR radiation. The cool part is that the energy hits the substrate directly. You aren’t wasting time trying to heat up all the air in the room first. It’s fast. Really fast. Just a heads-up on the power side: these lamps can handle a lot of wattage, but you’ve got to match your power supplies. If you cram too many watts into a short tube, you’ll fry the filaments. To play it safe, we always leave about a 10% overhead on the voltage regulators. It saves you from those nasty power spikes. A few tips for the install We use standard connectors, so swapping these out during maintenance is a breeze. No need to rebuild half your machine just to replace a lamp. But here is the catch: quartz is fragile. When you’re mounting them, make sure the brackets aren’t pinching the tube. If there’s too much tension, the tube will snap the very first time it heats up. Trust me, you don’t want to hear that sound. And one last thing—be careful with your hands. High-purity quartz is a bit pricier than the basic glass stuff, and it’s sensitive. Even a single fingerprint left on the tube can create a hot spot, which leads to a premature burnout. Give them a quick wipe with some IPA before you wire them up, and you’ll be good to go.
